When Coco Chanel came up with the idea of a Little Black Dress back in 1926, little did she know that she had created history!
Or did she? Either way, I bet there’s not one girl out there who doesn’t have at least one Little Black Dress. It’s practically a wardrobe essential, and a leading part of teen fashion today.
The dress, or LBD as it is popularly called, was considered to be a revolutionary change in the fashion conventions of the time, as the color was Black and well; women did not quite have the kind of freedom that we do now.
It was showcased as one of the more casual wardrobe additions that women can be comfortable in, while at the same time keeping it stylish, which was against the norms of the time when women were expected to wear tight corsets in order to maintain their “pigeon” shape.
Today, the Little Black Dress has gone through some serious changes and is no longer attributed to any particular occasion or style. It’s super versatile and you can actually create a whole new look by including just one or two wardrobe additions or changing a few elements, to go from “girl’s day out” to “date night”. You’ll see what I mean in a bit.
Here are 5 awesome new ways to style the quintessential LBD.
Girls’ day out LBD
Let’s start with a day look. When you’re going shopping or to the movies or binge eating with the girls on Saturday, you want to be super comfortable and stylish at the same time, right? All you need to do is wear your cute
Little Black Dress (make sure it’s a pretty girly-looking one) with a leather moto jacket. Throw on a pair of either statement sandals (in black), or sexy black ankle boots with heels.
For an extra edge, you can wear a lacy bralet inside, just to make the lace peak through your LBD. And go for nude or understated lips for the day time.
Date night LBD
For date night, if you’re planning it on the same day as the girls’ day out, all you got to do is change the flat sandals or boots to stilettoes, take off your moto jacket and slap on red lipstick. We all know what a great combination red and black is for date night.
If you want to put together a different look for your date, you can pick the shortest LBD in your closet and wear it jeans. This would especially look great if your Little Black Dress is velvet. For full sleeves and high-neck ones, you can also put on a pin or brooch on your shoulder.
For a day time date, you can wear your LBD with a statement printed long jacket, following the lines of Lily Aldrige or Gigi Hadid. Animal prints, florals or geometric prints; the choice is yours.
Business casual Little Black Dress
Pull out your crisp button down shirt and wear it underneath your LBD; the deeper the neck of your LBD the better. Even if your LBD has a high neck, your button down shirt is still going to peek through above, mostly the collars.
Ankle boots are one of the best wardrobe additions to go with this look, along with a chain strap bag. This is one look that brings back the 60s preppy vibe in a fresh new way.
For the same reason, this is more of a semi-formal or business casual look. The button down shirt will make it even more so. And don’t be afraid to experiment with colors for your shirt. As mentioned before, being black in color, the LBD is very versatile.
Alone time Little Black Dress
For days that you just want to head out, take a few, (or lots of) selfies and go lipstick shopping, without another person waiting next to you to finish switching the mauve shades for the 10th time, you can wear a straight fitting LBD. Anything that doesn’t hug your body in any particular place will allow you to let go of that tiny belly pooch you’re trying hard to hold back in and wander about freely.
Pair the dress with sneakers for a unique vibe. Hoop earrings would also be a great wardrobe addition to this look.
Social Little Black Dress
In case you have a formal dinner planned with your colleagues or friends, you can wear an off-the-shoulder LBD or a full sleeve and high-neck LBD with a statement necklace. It goes without saying how powerful an impression you can make with a black dress and a rose gold or silver statement necklace. But do make sure that the Little Black Dress doesn’t have any complicated drapes or trims. Since we already have a chunky necklace, we want to balance it out with a simple silhouette and not go too overboard with the details.
So which style are you going to try?
