I’m all about a drugstore makeup haul. $5 lip gloss? Eyeshadow palette for $7.99? #Signmeup This was especially true when I was just beginning to experiment with makeup, and I wasn’t yet sure what really worked for me.
However, as I’ve gotten more experienced with makeup application and more confident in makeup, and when you should dig a little deeper. Depending on the product, you totally get trying new colors and trends, I’ve also learned when it’s okay to spend pocket change on what you pay for, and sometimes the splurge is worth it—even if you have to ask your parents for some extra cash.
Here’s a look at my favorite high-end and online makeup brands for teens.
Anastasia Beverly Hills
You can’t have perfect makeup without perfect brows, and the perfect brows have to look totally effortless. Anastasia Beverly Hills make achieving that effortless perfection totally possible, since Anastasia Soare, the founder of the brand, has been sculpting the brows of celebs since 1997. If her products are good enough for Hollywood elite, they’re certainly good enough for me.
MUST TRY: Brow wiz. One of Anastasia’s many award-winning products designed to give you instagram-worthy brows, this pencil has developed a cult-like following for its ability to create hair-like strokes that look amazingly real. Thick brows are in, so if yours are a little sparse, let Brow Wiz work its magic.
I’ll rock a drugstore foundation in a heartbeat (I even recommended Maybelline’s Fit Me foundation to my mom, and she looooves), but my fav foundation that I’ve been wearing for over a year is from Tarte’s Amazonian Clay line. Tarte slays with products that look great and make you feel good, too. Many of them are vegan-friendly, hypoallergenic, and dermatologist tested.
MUST TRY: Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Foundation with SPF 15 blends easily and comes in 40 different shades, so you’re sure to find the one that’s right for you. Even though it provides full coverage, the formula is so light and breathable that it won’t ever matte or crease. If you haven’t already found a foundation that you love, pick this one up ASAP.
If there’s any brand that’s a must-have for creating a #flawless face, it’s Laura Mercier. Eyeshadows, and blushes, and lipsticks are great, but if they’re not applied on a smooth foundation, they won’t ever look their best. Laura Mercier is literally known as the “pioneer of the Flawless Face,” and while you may not be able to sit in her chair and have her personally apply your makeup, her products are the next best thing.
MUST TRY: Translucent Loose Setting Powder. Women of all ages and skin tones rely on Laura Mercier’s translucent powder in their daily makeup routines. Yes, you need a powder to set your foundation and concealer, and yes, this is the one you need to buy. I’ve tried other brands, but this is the one I come back to every time.
In 2013, after three years of running a beauty blog, Huda Kattan launched a makeup line that has become one of my favorites. Kattan is of Iraqi descent, so she is committed to creating a diverse product line that looks good on all skin tones, and she has also pledged to never compromise on the quality of her products. Basically, you may spend a little extra, but it’s totally worth it. Just ask Kim Kardashian, who’s a huge fan of Huda Beauty false eyelashes.
MUST TRY: Obsessions Eyeshadow Palette, Electric. If you’re looking to make a statement with your eye makeup, start here. Huda Beauty’s eyeshadows are some of the most richly pigmented in the industry, and even better, the colors stay exactly where you put them. That means no fallout when you apply, and no fading during the day.
